A focus on career progression and promotion procedures and practice in the management of workplace diversity is key to achieving diversity at all levels in the organisation. In turn, diversity at all levels of the organisation serves to underpin an organisational culture that values diversity and equality, and renders the organisation attractive to a diversity of potential and actual employees. Useful sources of guidance would include:
- The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions sets out strands of action to support professional development in the workplace for women to enable career progression in Promoting Gender Equality in the Workplace (pp. 44-47).
- The European Network Against Racism, with the involvement of private sector partners, outlines challenges and best practices to enable career progress for minority ethnic staff in Glass Ceiling for Ethnic Minorities (pp. 15 to 18), with specific recommendations for employers (pp. 22 to 23).
- In Promoting Equality in Employment (pp. 24 to 31) the same organisation outlines actions to enable progression and well-being for minority ethnic employees.
- In A Toolkit for Gender Equality in Practice, the European Social Partners (ETUC, BUSINESSEUROPE, UEAPME and CEEP) provide 100 initiatives for gender equality, with good practices to promote women in decision-making as one priority area.
